Mkango Resources Ltd. (MKA.V: TSX-V) is a rare-earth focused company that holds a 100% interest in two exclusive prospecting licenses in southern Malawi covering a combined area of 1,751km. Their main exploration target is the Songwe rare earth project, which was previously drilled in the late 1980s. At the 2012 Cambridge House Resource Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, SNNLive spoke to Mkango’s CEO, Will Dawes.

In this interview, Mr. Dawes discusses Mkango’s work in Malawi, where they have been drilling for terbium, yttrium, and dysprosium, which is suitable for use in high-strength magnets that go into such diverse items as disc drives and wind turbines. “We’ve done 2,000 meters last year, and we’ve just kicked off another phase of drilling, which will be about 3,000–5,000 meters.”

He explains how Malawi’s location is ideal, saying, “Malawi’s very fortunate to be at the crossroads of a huge amount of infrastructure development that’s going on in southern Africa.” A billion-dollar railroad is now beingconstructed that will pass through Malawi on its way to the east African coast.
