Anthony Desir is SAMI’s head of Corporate Finance and the fund’s partner in Asia, where he has developed a representation relationship with one of China’s leading SOE investment banking groups. He has headed the China- Africa investment consultancy practice since 2007. In this Wall Street View, our host spoke with Anthony Desir from the Strategic African Mineral Investment (SAMI) Funds at the Growth Capital Expo 2015 in Las Vegas, NV.
Travelling from Hong Kong, Mr. Desir spoke at the conference about, “China investments: the relationship between growth capital and China.”
He explains, “A lot of people think that because China is putting so much money into the US and into investments outside of China that there’s money available for growth capital, and actually, that’s not the case. So, that was the question that came up, ‘How can we get our hands on the money in China?’, the answer is obviously is you can’t.”
When asked what issuers can do instead, Mr. Desir states, “Well, I think you have to focus on traditional funding sources because China is not a traditional funding source for growth capital. And, if you have a company that’s further down the value chain, certainly, they will be interested in that, but you need to be careful because I think the Chinese are probably buyers, not partners.”
