The Pollen-Tech concept came from Tom Brown who was made aware of the problem facing growers and their dependence on bees. Pollen-Tech quickly reached out to pollen companies and spray companies and began working with them to develop a way to solve the pollination crisis. The company has tested on over 200 acres with 3 different crops. We have a goal to revolutionize agriculture by giving growers direct control over pollination- increasing yields and decreasing risk. SNNLive spoke with David Wade, CEO of Pollen-Tech at First Look LA 2014 presented by LAVA in Los Angeles, CA.
“We’ve created a system or a methodology mechanically pollinating the crops that you and I eat – that’s about 1/3 of everything that the world eats and in the process, we’ve got a process that’s more effective and efficient than bees,” begins Mr. Wade. He continues, “Here in California, with almonds, you have to import 1.6 million hives of bees just to pollinate the almond, let alone the cherries and everything else that’s going on and so our process can help those bees so they’re not so overworked.”
Mr. Wade explains, “We are using 100% natural pollen that we gather from the various plants for crops that we’re pollinating, but then we have a mechanical process that encapsulates the pollen in a pollen slurry, that we parented, that protects it and then we charge it electrostatically which helps it get to the stigma of the flower where it needs to be to fertilize that flower and create the fruit or the crop.” For more information, check out their website at www.pollen-tech.com.
