In this Wall Street View, our host spoke with Brent Cook, Editor/Geologist of Exploration Insights at the New Orleans Investment Conference 2014.
Mr. Cook is a featured speaker at the conference and begins with the topic he spoke about, “The title of my talk is ‘Peak Gold: Problem or Opportunity?’ and I think it is an opportunity so that’s what I’m speaking on. Addressing what I see is a serious issue in this sector, not just gold but metals in general is that we are no longer finding enough new deposits to replace what we’re actually mining."
He explains that this serious problem is caused by the decrease in metal prices and in order to increase profitability, mining companies had to “cut production, or at least high-grade their deposits, they’ve had to cut exploration, they’ve had to cut development, their whole future they’ve cut into, at the same time they’re not finding enough new deposits to replace what’s being mined." These cost-cutting measures are taken to maintain earning per share, but Mr. Cook believes that not being able to replace what they’re currently mining will ultimately lead to the eventual decline of that company.
Although the mining market is not doing well for the companies, Mr. Cook explains how this current market is very appealing for investors, “For us investors in this junior sector, it’s fantastic in that all we have to do is own the very few dozen or so companies with projects or people that are capable of finding these deposits.” He adds, “We want to own junior companies with the deposits – economic deposits so they’re gonna buy…you know there’s maybe a dozen good deposits out there and gold deposits right now that I would want to own.” For more information, check out his website: www.ExplorationInsights.com
