In this SNN Q&A, StockNewsNow.com's Editor-in-Chief Robert Kraft, spoke with Dr. William Roof, Chief Executive Officer of Intellicheck Mobilisa, Inc. (NYSE MKT: IDN) to discuss the company, IDN’s technology, products, and more…
SNN: Overview of Intellicheck Mobilisa
WR: Intellicheck provides customers with identification authentication solutions. Intellicheck's innovative technology solutions span key industries including national defense, law enforcement, retail, and hospitality markets. The intellectual property powering our product line is protected by our 24 patent portfolio, which includes many patents pertaining to identification technology.
The diversity of our product line and the markets we serve share a vital common trait; the compelling need to know that the identification credentials presented by any individual are, in fact, authentic. Equally important, is our customers' “need to know now” at the moment the engagement begins and that is why our products have become the preferred choice to address real-time, instantaneous information requirements.
Our technology solutions also reflect the needs of today’s mobile world, so they work on smartphones, tablets, or integrate with existing systems allowing us to meet the implementation needs of our diverse customer base and the markets we serve.
We know that an authentication solution is only effective if it easily accesses the databases where critical information is stored. Further distinguishing our identity solutions is our ability to authenticate identification data from more than 200 unique barcode formats from every state and Canadian province. Our solutions can also authenticate TWIC and federal personal identity verification (PIV) smart cards, and common access cards (CAC). We also work with state and federal authorities to achieve case-by-case authorization allowing appropriate clients, such as law enforcement agencies and defense establishments, to use our products to connect to other key state and federal databases, as well as custom databases.
SNN: Where was the technology developed?
WR: This technology was developed by Intellicheck engineers and scientists at our New York and Washington facilities.
SNN: Can you describe each of the company’s products?
WR: Intellicheck's sophisticated identity authentication products are designed for the markets we serve.
Defense ID: Every time an individual approaches, the entry to a restricted facility there is a potential risk. Is that person who they say they are? Are they authorized to enter the facility at all? And if so, should they be limited to accessing only certain areas at certain times?
In real time, Defense ID checks visitors’ identification documents against key national databases such as the FBI’s criminal database to determine whether the individual seeking to gain access to the facility is on a terrorist watch list, is wanted, considered armed and dangerous, has a restraining order, or otherwise may be considered a threat to the facility and its personnel.
Additionally, Intellicheck solutions improve operational efficiencies by quickly producing rules-based access credentials, making it possible for visitors to be granted access only to specific areas at specific, pre-determined times and under defined threat conditions.
Hospitality ID: Balancing a great guest experience with fighting fraud is a big challenge. Our customers want their guests to be able to check-in quickly and efficiently, but must be sure the person checking in is not misrepresenting their identity. With Intellicheck, the guest’s ID is instantly authenticated, and their information is accurately entered into the property management system directly from their ID. No more keystroke errors. No time wasted.
Customers can count on Intellicheck solutions to be compliant with all regulatory requirements. Additionally, Intellicheck solutions work on mobile devices or integrate with existing property management solutions.
Law ID: Whenever an officer makes contact with an unknown individual, the safety of both the officer and the individual is of paramount concern. Intellicheck’s law enforcement solutions reduce the risks that come with these encounters by instantly and accurately authenticating an individual’s identification using a smartphone or tablet to authenticate the identity document; usually a driver license.
With critical data fields clearly highlighted, an officer can quickly view the information returned from DMV and criminal records on their mobile device that details the validity of that identification and whether the individual is on watch lists such as a terrorist watch list or the subject of a be on the look out alert, is considered armed and dangerous or has legal issues that may pose a threat. Delivering this critical information instantaneously into the palm of a police officer's hand means minimal loss of visual contact during the ID process, without the need to turn their backs on the individual.
Intellicheck’s law enforcement solutions also reduce an officer’s time spent writing reports—while increasing the accuracy of those reports—by automatically populating form fields with the data retrieved during the ID search.
Retail ID: Ensuring the best possible customer service every day is a big challenge for every retailer. Retailers need to keep fraud in check without slowing down service. With an additional goal to increase credit card and loyalty program applications and conversions, requiring customers enter all that data manually is cumbersome and detracts from an optimal customer experience.
Intellicheck helps solve both problems at once. In fact, Intellicheck offers proven identity authentication solutions that instantly and accurately authenticate a buyer’s true identity. This reduces fraud. Of equal import to retailers, Intellicheck's Retail ID increases credit card and loyalty signups and conversions by making it much faster and easier for retail customers to complete the necessary forms.
Intellicheck solutions are fast and easy to deploy, and they work on mobile devices or integrate with existing point-of-sale systems.
SNN: Does Intellicheck's technology track coming and going of individuals? In other words, does it track when someone leaves a facility for instance?
Intellicheck’s technology can track both coming and going of individuals. While our clients are not currently using the “going” capability, we expect more will do so given the many domestic and international security concerns from terrorism to even industrial espionage. Consider the implications for building access and determining whether an individual may still be in the building after hours.
SNN: Does the technology lend itself to eye & fingerprint scanning?
Yes, it does. Some of our clients are currently using our technology solutions to read fingerprints to authenticate individuals accessing seaports and petroleum refineries. We can instantly check many forms of identification that include iris scans where we would employ the same level of access and privacy protection that allows us to check ID information against the FBI’s National Crime Information Center data sources.
SNN: Who are the company’s target markets? Who are some of your clients?
WR: Intellicheck focuses on four key markets: Defense, Hospitality, Law Enforcement and Retail. Our clients include The US Army and US Navy; Choice Hotels; law enforcement agencies of all sizes nationwide, and major retailers that sell a broad spectrum of products nationwide. We also partner with important industry organizations such as American Beverage Licensees to bring our technology solutions to members of these industry organizations.
SNN: On Tuesday, October 13th, the company announced, “US Army’s Fort Sill Expands Adoption of Intellicheck’s Defense ID.” Using this as an example, how do the company’s products serve your customer base?
WR: Our products provide situational awareness for our customers. We define situational awareness as an unbiased view of people and, potentially, their intentions. Understanding whether an identification document presented by a person is authentic and, in some instances, whether that person is included on a law enforcement watch list or even a terrorist watch list, is critical to situational awareness and, correspondingly, to threat mitigation. Whether that threat comes in the form of violence or fraudulent deceit, our products provide the tools needed to understand and to immediately address the situation.
SNN: Is it future growth to sell to the Department of Defense and Homeland security for airports, train stations and large stadiums, etc?
Yes, our future plans are to increase our presence and capabilities for the Department of Defense and we are currently working with the DoD to do this now. Additionally, we are currently developing partnerships that will allow us to work with the Department of Homeland Security to provide stronger levels of security for our citizens, including mass transit stations and events where many individuals gather, such as sporting events, concerts, etc.
SNN: What is your background?
WR: I am a career intelligence and law enforcement expert with a doctorate in software engineering. Having served our country for over 30 years, I am using my expertise to meet the challenges of providing situational awareness in an effort to address market needs ranging from the combating of international terrorism and domestic criminal activities to preventing fraud and improving customer experiences to create brand loyalty and preferences.
