In this Wall Street View, our host spoke with James Collins, Founder Partner of The Portfolio Guru at the Marcum MicroCap Conference 2015 in New York City, NY.
“Mainly what I do is I invest money for my clients. We have two strategies: one is income, where we take monthly dividends and re-invest them, and the other strategy is ‘home runs’, I would call it, where people are looking for stocks with tremendous returns, albeit, with maybe some more risk – that’s where we get to the microcaps,” Mr. Collins begins, “I think the key is basic equity analysis, so that would be…you look for a market that’s growing, you look for a company that’s gaining market share in that, you look for a company that has protected intellectual property, usually measured via patents, and you look for a company that has a path towards profitability, doesn’t have to be profitable right away – these are small companies, but you have to have a definite path that I can model out…I do like my spreadsheets.”
Mr. Collins goes on to discuss what differentiates a stock from the rest of the pack, weighted judgment of management when considering an investment in a MicroCap stock, current breakdown of industries, liquidity and volume, insider buying and selling, determining when to buy and sell, IPO market in MicroCaps, and where the MicroCap market is headed for the rest of 2015 going into 2016.
