ClearSign Combustion Corporation (NASDAQ: CLIR) designs and develops technologies that aim to improve key performance characteristics of combustion systems including energy efficiency, emissions control, fuel flexibility and overall cost effectiveness. The company's Electrodynamic Combustion Control™ (ECC™) platform technology improves control of flame shape and heat transfer and optimizes the complex chemical reactions that occur during combustion in order to minimize harmful emissions. SNNLive spoke with Richard Rutkowski, Chairman and CEO of ClearSign Combustion Corp. at Singular Research's 9th Annual "Best of the Uncovereds" Conference 2014 in Bel Air, CA.
Mr. Rutkowski begins with an overview of ClearSigns, “We’re a company that does combustion and emissions control technology and we’ve developed some really revolutionary, next generation technology, in that we can take emissions further than anything on the market – the lowest emissions of any control technology on the market, but importantly with the highest performance and the lowest cost and performance in combustion means everything.” Even the slightest improvements in combustion performance and efficiency can add up to millions in annual costs, he explains.
An example of a company that would benefit from this technology is Aera, “They operate about 120 of what are called once-through steam generators, these are large, large steam generators and the steam is pumped underground to allow the oil to flow, so it’s fundamental to the process of extracting heavy oil from underground. These systems without emissions controls can produce a lot of what is called NOx's, Nitrogen Oxide, that causes smog and ground-level ozone. So they are closely regulated as you would guess by the authorities there. The problem is with the current technology, they have to circulate a lot of flue gas – that costs money, it takes power and energy away from the system to do that. Our system is going to allow them to hit these NOx's numbers to eliminate external flue gas for circulation and increase the overall energy efficiency and reduce cost.”
He explains how when we think of energy we think of transportation, but only about 27% of all the energy in the world is being used towards transportation. Clearsign’s target market is the rest of the large sectors that use these large amounts of energy. They find industrial facilities such as refineries and retrofit certain machinery to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. For more information, check out their website at: www.ClearSign.com
