Warp 9, Inc. (OTCQB: WNYN) is a provider of digital commerce services for midsize online sellers. They focus on desktop e-commerce, mobile commerce, most recently added a security division, in light of recent information leaks for online retailers. Warp 9 is known for utilizing the Magento™ platform, for both desktop and mobile commerce solutions.
1. Mr. Van Noy, let’s start with an overview of Warp 9, Inc.
Warp9 has been in business since 1998, and we have obviously seen a lot of change in the e-commerce industry since then. We were one of the early solutions providers with a proprietary e-commerce software platform, but over the years we transitioned to open-source software, like Magento. This powerful software gives our customers the ability to scale and the flexibility to customize it to their heart's desire. We are based in sunny Santa Barbara, California, just a few hours from Los Angeles.
2. How does the company’s flagship product, WarpMobile Magento™, work? As it says on your website, Magento™ is an open source ecommerce platform – how does this help you to customize your product for your clients?
WarpMobile Magento is a tool we built after gaining invaluable mobile commerce experience spending three years working on the mobile sites for customers such as Macy’s, Movado, Jared and Kay Jewelers, and many other Fortune 500 sites. We noticed a problem within the Magento industry where there is no easy and affordable way to build a quality mobile site without rebuilding your whole desktop site, which could take months and be very expensive. WarpMobile Magento is a highly customizable version of their e-commerce website that is sized and optimized for viewing on mobile devices like the iPhone. WarpMobile Magento is deeply integrated into the desktop Magento site, and can be deployed rapidly, but is also robust enough to be used on enterprise level high-traffic sites.
3. Who is your target market?
We provide solutions for medium-sized online sellers in both the B2C and B2B marketplaces.
4. What distinguishes WarpMobile Magento™ from its competitors?
The main competition for WarpMobile Magento is what we refer to as “responsive web design.” The main problem with responsive websites are that in order to mobilize your existing website, you basically have to start over from scratch, and rebuild everything. Once the site is responsive, a merchant is very limited in how they can customize the desktop and mobile browsing experiences because the code is so closely tied together, meaning, if you try and make a feature look different on a mobile page, you can often break the code on the desktop site. What sets WarpMobile Magento apart is the fact that we can just leave your desktop site alone and quickly set up a mobile version that is optimized for mobile-specific shopping. In addition, we built WarpMobile Magento so that merchants can customize the mobile experience by offering mobile-specific promotions, something responsive sites cannot do. Furthermore, if you aren't having to rethink your entire desktop site in the process, WarpMobile Magento can typically get your site “mobilized” in 30 days or less!
5. Cyber security has been a hot-button issue since the end of last year, and you recently announced on January 7th, that the company unveiled a new line of cyber security solutions for Warp’s current and future clients. Can you describe these solutions in greater detail?
The first step in helping secure websites is to enact a 2-factor authentication system on the login page of the administrative section of the website. If you've never seen 2-factor authentication before, it works like this: The user enters their username and password, and the system generates a one-time-use key-code. The key-code is sent via a text message to the user’s cellphone, and upon entering that the user then gains access into the administrative section where potentially sensitive data is stored. This seemingly simple tactic is said to deter hackers or malicious bot attacks in the majority of cases. In addition to that, we provide custom-engineered security solutions that range in size and complexity.
6. Why is a focus on mobile e-commerce and security so important?
In the case of mobile, many studies have shown that customers are much more likely to browse and buy from sites that are mobile optimized - people are just on their phones 24/7 these days. And in terms of the importance of security, we see this as a highly important need for online retailers in this day and age, due to the ever-growing rise in breaches and hackings, as evidenced by such high-profile companies as Sony and Morgan Stanley. Looking back, one can imagine that they would pay any price to have avoided such catastrophes.
7. What is your background?
I am a capitalist and entrepreneur at heart, with a background in both private equity and investment banking, as well as tech startups. I started my very first business mowing lawns in my neighborhood when I was 12, and by the time I was in high school had a crew working for me.
8. What can we expect from Warp 9 in 2015?
We are looking to aggressively grow organically in the B2C and B2B digital commerce space, as well as accelerating growth through strategic acquisitions. We have identified other digital commerce platforms and service providers that could strategically add value to our customers and help strengthen both our top line and bottom line growth.
